The month of July always brings a sports lull. Sports fans are enjoying the Major League Baseball All-Star Break Festivities, but they are anxious for the rapidly approaching NFL and NCAA football seasons. Despite three of the four major sports being out of season, this past week still had its share of highlights and outstanding performances. The Mets are on fire, the Red Sox have taken the lead back in the AL East, Riccardo Ricco won two stages of the Tour de France, Kyle Busch continues to dominate both the Nationwide and Sprint Cup circuits, Paula Creamer shot an absurd round of 60 and Philadelphia and San Jose will meet for the Arena Bowl title. Here are the latest RootZoo award winners. Enjoy the All-Star Festivities!
RootZoo Athlete of the Week: C.C. SabathiaThere were many questions surrounding Sabathia after he was traded from the Indians to the Brewers. Would he struggle to adjust to the National League? He went out and won his first two starts, posting a 2.67 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP while striking out 14 in 15 innings, including a complete game against the Reds on Sunday, a game in which he also helped his own cause by hitting his second home run of the season. The home run made him the first pitcher to homer in both leagues in the same season since 1970. Behind both Sabathia and Ben Sheets, the Brewers have two aces and a legitimate chance to win the NL Central division. Congratulations, C.C. Sabathia!
RootZoo Team of the Week: New York Mets***A special thanks to lindydawgs8 for the following write-up about the RootZoo Team of the Week:
The Mets, winners of 9 straight, have climbed to within a 1/2 game of 1st place in the NL East. Jerry Manuel has this team rolling. Their pitching has been dominant. They had 3 shutouts in 5 games and also allowed no more than three hits in five consecutive games. The bullpen has been stellar. The Mets bats have come alive, led by Beltran, Reyes and All-Star David Wright. There has also been the re-emergence of Fernando Tatis.

1) Congratulations, once again to AGENTZER00, our RootZoo Baseball Challenge winner, who witnessed home run derby history tonight as Josh Hamilton sent 28 balls over the fence in one round. AGENTZER00 will also see the All-Star game tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium as the second half of his prize package. There will be a new MLB contest announced sometime Wednesday, so keep an eye out for this and be ready for a great finish to the baseball season!
2) Keep the great Video Blitz videos coming in. With over 40 videos already submitted, things are shaping up as we reach the halfway point of July. There are some very impressive videos already in the mix. Does the winner sit among these 40+, or will the second half of the month bring us even better videos? It’s definitely not too late to make yours. If you haven’t seen any of these videos yet, I’d suggest you have a look here.
3) A new look to the articles section will launch within the very near future. Among other things, the new format will aim to give the best articles and writers the recognition they deserve. Be on the lookout for this and let us know your thoughts about it once it’s here.
4) Feel like predicting this year’s World Series winner? This year’s NL batting champ and this year’s AL MVP and Cy Young winner? The first NBA player to score 50 points in a game this upcoming season? Feel like wagering points on these things? If the answer was yes to any of those questions, there’s good news – a new pick ‘em futures section is in the works. This will allow you to place point wagers on a handful of future events in the sports world.
That’s all the news for today. This coming Wednesday will mark what many call the most uneventful day in the sports world but I’m sure we’ll all find ways to keep each other busy despite the lack of sports. Keep it clean and drama free, and let’s make it a great week!
